Tummaa essentially features a live trio – Ripatti on percussion, Argentine musician Lucio Capece on clarinet and saxophone, and acclaimed Scottish soundtrack composer and arranger Craig Armstrong on piano and Rhodes (Ripatti previously collaborated with Armstrong on the 1995 album The Dolls, along with Ante Greie). Ripatti set the tone, recording his drum parts and then inviting Capece to his studio to improvise alongside the drums. Armstrong offered recordings of pure solo piano playing he had made for the project. From these two sound sources, Ripatti began composing and arranging, and wrote a whole suite of music.

With this project and these sounds I try not to let any outside influence come through and just fully trust my instincts to make the music I really need to bring out and hear. I try not to think or analyze, I just go at the moment and play as I feel. It's the introverted and slightly darker side of me, the anti-pop persona that comes out on this project."

Created during the winter while Ripatti and his family were living on a remote island in the Baltic Sea within the Arctic Circle, he explains that Tummaa means dark or darkness, which reflects the music on the album somehow but also the fact that I worked on the album during 'kaamos' time of the year in Finland. Kaamos time really gets dark from December to February where you only have few hours of light per day. I really liked that and the whole winter enormously.

The results are jaw-dropping. Venerated as a master of rhythm and a true artisan of the studio (the photos of his immaculate analogue studio from The Wire's 2008 cover shoot had gear hounds aquiver) capturing resonant, organic and acoustic sounds and coercing them into unearthly cadences and foreign textures that are unlike anything else – yet irresistibly hypnotic. (His disclosed past as an enthusiast for mind altering substances comes as no surprise). Ripatti's love of jazz is also never far from the surface.

Jazz has been the most influential thing in my life without a doubt. Musicianship, creativity, pushing the limits, improvisation… I think no matter what type of music I'm making my jazz roots and appreciation of it plays a big role. There are some exceptional things that happened during the 60s and 70s that are very important to me. What some of the greats did shaped the future of music so strongly. Miles Davis, but also John Coltrane, lots of drummers, Bill Evans and his trio…

Tummaa's compositions are engaging and engulfing, whole worlds of sonic wonder and journeys into the deep that will leave you gasping. The constant push for more honest and revealing emotions abut against the same desire for absolute integrity of the sonic qualities. It's a heady combination. Armstrong's waterfall piano and Rhodes infuse 'Melankolia' with sweeping emotion amid the tension and intensity of Ripatti's fractured, almost industrial percussive fragments, anticipatory fizzes and low-end hums. In some ways, this is a very gentle introduction to the incredible galaxy of sound contained on 'Kuula (Kiitos)' (translated as 'Bullet (Thank You)'), where glimmering piano bleeds into the fabric of Capece's strangled bass clarinet and muffled soprano sax, entwined with a scattering of grainy beats.

By far the most immediately striking piece is the woody, resounding animal honk of 'Mustelmia' (meaning 'Bruises') where a defiantly springy, bouncy array of volcanic beats and liquid gulps and pops erupt in response to Capece's eerie tones and textures. While 'Musta Planeetta' ('Black Planet') is a more meditative play across the keyboard timbres, 'Toive' ('Wish') builds into a crescendo of throbbing, submarine percussion, Capece's horns like distant wildlife in a tropical forest. 'Tummaa' has a cavernous dub sensibility, all ricocheting percussion and the Rhodes distilled to stabs or glistening feedback reverberations. 'Tunnelivisio' ('Tunnel Vision') burrows even deeper into the echo chamber, lending a psyche-cinematic drama to the album's finale. It's not often you find yourself both dumbfounded and emotionally spent by listening to an album, but Tummaa is a feat of uncommon musical power and magnetic force. Once introduced to Sasu Ripatti's hypnotic world, you won't ever want to leave.

"L’interazione fra concezioni musicali agli antipodi è sempre stata una tentazione irresistibile per i musicisti più ambiziosi. Nel caso specifico, cercare possibili collegamenti fra musica classica (o jazz) e pulsazioni techno è stato un obiettivo spesso ambito da diversi anni a questa parte. Partendo dalla fanfare jazz trasfigurate della Matthew Herbert Big Band, passando per il primo splendido disco di Murcof, e arrivando al progetto dello stesso Carl Craig più attinente all’argomento: il disco “Programmed” dell’orchestra Innerzone. I ritmi, quando scomposti e sostenuti, quando caldi e ammalianti, hanno sempre provato a sollecitare (o assecondare) un’atmosfera tutt’altro che abituata a certi stravolgimenti melodici e strutturali. Il risultato, se non supportato da ispirazione e smisurato controllo dei mezzi, s'è dimostrato spesso fuori centro e anacronistico.

Carl Craig e Moritz Von Oswald sono due mostri sacri della techno e non sarà certo questa prova a provarlo ulteriormente. Le collaborazioni assidue (si scambiano spesso remix), unite alla stima reciproca, hanno condotto in porto un rifacimento a cui soltanto artisti di tale caratura potevano rispondere con tale precisione e solerzia. La storia di questa operazione è molto sintetica: l’etichetta Deutsche Grammophon ha proposto la cosa a Oswald, il quale ha contattato l’amico afro-americano per coinvolgerlo, quest’ultimo ha accettato ed è partito il processo di rivisitazione. Rita Marcotulli - Omaggio ai Pink Floyd (2008)

"Us and them", "noi e loro" si intitola l'omaggio ai Pink Floyd ideato da Rita Marcotulli insieme a Raiz alla voce, Andy Sheppard ai sassofoni, Fausto Mesolella alla chitarra, Giovanni Tommaso al contrabbasso, Mattew Garrison al basso elettrico, Michele Rabbia alle percussioni e ai suoni elettronici, e Alfredo Golino alla batteria.
L'evocazione di aspetti cosmici e del quotidiano attraverso la sperimentazione del suono, la rottura delle forme convenzionali e la poetica delle melodie , rendono la musica dei Pink Floyd non solo attuale ma ancora fonte di ispirazione per questa formazione di musicisti che, pur provenendo da realtà musicali diverse, vi trovano un linguaggio comune.
I brani eseguiti sono, tra gli altri: Money,Us and Them, Wish you were here, Cry song, Burning bridges, Set the controls for the heart of the sun.

Il Divo OST (2008)

La sera che vidi questo film con Alice e Fet fummo tutti e tre colpiti dalla bellissima colonna sonora. Di ritorno a casa cercai invano di procurarmela, ma scoprii che ancora doveva uscire nei negozi e nessuno l'aveva ancora condivisa. Oggi l'ho trovata, persino in altissima qualità, e ve ne omaggio. Belle le musiche originali, fantastico il brano dei Cassius che accompagna i titoli di testa. E' probabile che a breve diventi un tormentone in casa nostra, complice anche il compagno Fet.

Tricky - Knowle West Boy (2008)

Dopo il ritorno della sora Gibbons, direttamente dai quartieri più malfamati di Bristol ecco a voi il nuovo lavoro del maledetto cane Adrian Thaws, in arte Tricky. A un primo, superficiale ascolto mi pare buletto, a parte un paio di cadute ragga un po' cacacazzi (d'altronde uno dei due brani in questione si chiama "Bacative", nomen omen). Segnalo cover di "Slow" di Kylie Minogue molto (para)cool. Ricordo che il mostro di Bristol è stato recentemente confermato al FIB 2008, per chi avesse la fortuna di andarci.

In The Mirror of Maya Deren

Maya Deren was one of the pioneering figures of avant-garde cinema in America and also a noted author, poet, anthropologist, and alternative cultural figure of the 1940s and 1950s. Born Eleanora Derenkovsky in 1917, her family fled Kiev in 1922 to avoid political and economic reprisals brought on by her father's association with Leon Trotsky. Settling in Syracuse, NY, the family shortened their name to Deren, and Eleanora developed a passionate interest in dance and literature. After receiving degrees in English Literature and Journalism, Deren relocated to Los Angeles, where she worked with the pioneering African-American choreographer Katherine Dunham and wrote an essay on "Religious Possession in Dancing." After marrying director Alexander Hackenschmied (aka Alexander Hammid), Deren bought a second-hand movie camera and made Meshes of the Afternoon, an award-winning and highly influential experimental film, the first of many she would direct. After adopting the name Maya (taken from the Buddha's mother), Deren traveled to Haiti, where she began work on a film about the Voudon (or Voodoo) religion, and with the assistance of Joseph Campbell, she wrote a pioneering book on the subject called Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti. In the Mirror of Maya Deren is an ambitious documentary which examines the public and personal sides of Deren's life and work, including interviews with a number of friends and contemporaries, including Katherine Dunham, Stan Brakhage, Judith Malina, Alexander Hammid, and Jonas Mekas. The film also features an original score by noted experimental jazz composer John Zorn.
